Across the school, we aim to provide children with a range of opportunities to develop their unique interests. There are a range of leadership avenues the children may wish to pursue including Science Leaders, RE Prayer Leaders, ICT leaders, Sports Leaders, Gardening or the School Council.
All of these leadership opportunities provide the children with a chance to deliver genuine change across the school. Prayer leaders select and lead prayer on a weekly basis, while the ICT leaders are responsible for ongoing ‘tech’ issues as well as ensuring that the school TWITTER account is ticking over. The school council is elected by democratic vote each term. Recently the council has been responsible for promoting healthy packed lunch boxes including a focus on children’s sugar consumption. It organised the whole school community 40th birthday celebration and led on turning the school into a Fair Trade School. The school journalism team also publishes the newsletter which goes out every 2 weeks.
At Burley and Woodhead Primary School, we also place great importance in Enterprise education and aim to create an enterprising ethos throughout the school. We believe involvement in enterprise in education provides opportunities for different kinds of learning within and cross curricular areas. We see enterprise as a way to foster and develop core skills in real situations; to promote education for citizenship; to enhance pupil’s personal and social development and to provide opportunities for pupils to make informed choices and decisions. Many of the school’s activities easily lend themselves to enterprise education.
