At Burley and Woodhead Primary School, we place great importance on Enterprise education and aim to create an enterprising ethos throughout the school. We believe involvement in enterprise in education provides opportunities for different kinds of learning within and cross curricular areas. We see enterprise as a way to foster and develop core skills in real situations; to promote education for citizenship; to enhance pupil’s personal and social development and to provide opportunities for pupils to make informed choices and decisions. Many of the school’s activities easily lend themselves to enterprise education.

 For us Enterprise education consists of enterprise capability supported by financial capability and business understanding.

 We define enterprise capability as innovation, creativity, risk-management and risk-taking, and a can-do attitude and the drive to make ideas happen.

 In our school, some of the features of Enterprise education include the development of critical thinking skills, learner ownership, enquiry led learning, activities that promote team work and collaboration and reflection on learning. We aim for children to experience an enterprise project each year with their year group and to be exposed to an enterprise teaching and learning approach across the curriculum.

 An activity can be classed as enterprising by: - Having a real or contextual reason for it e.g. producing posters to raise awareness about Fairtrade, making something to sell, children taking over-all responsibility for planning, promotion and decision making for projects e.g. organising a sponsored event, leading school council to improve school. Members of staff act as facilitators and are on hand to offer advice and guidance. The extent of teacher intervention will depend on the age/stage and previous experience of the children involved.
